Is meditation good for heath? No one genuinely knows, if they say absolutely yes or absolutely no they are wrong. There is not any absolute answer thus far, anyone who tells you differently is not well informed. And for anything if a person says “this one (or ten) study proves…” that is typically not true.

There are some studies with very positive findings For Meditation, some have been discredited for various reasons however NONE are absolute, nor do they claim to be.

And there have been studies showing absolutely no benefit beyond a possible placebo effect. For the most part these studies also do not claim to be absolute.

Interestingly most of the body of evidence regarding meditation and mental health, primarily depression and anxiety, have been the least positive compared to other possible benefits. So there is some evidence, nothing conclusive, that Transcendental Meditation in particular can lower blood pressure, heart rate, increase gamma waves (not alpha or beta), and do all sorts of things. Some studies, typically low quality, indicate possible benefits with epilepsy, diabetes, immune system, and many other things.

The United States National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (part of NIH) has done one of the largest meta-analysis (a study of studies to draw a better conclusion) on about 1,000 studies (almost all were small scale, low quality studies) and little was found although probably the best results where cardiovascular, primarily blood pressure and heart rate.

However their overall conclusion is, to be simple and somewhat crude, “most of the claims are not supported with available information, some show mild evidence of benefit in certain aspects, but in the end there is no conclusive evidence, additional study is required.”

There have been a few studies (again, fairly low quality) that do indicate some possible negative side effects, primarily from very “deep” meditation. For the most part these have been cognitive disturbances.

Personally I have done, to a significant level, meditation, biofeedback, and deep breathing and it would, to an extent, reduce my anxiety a little and I could lower my blood pressure and pulse significantly but as soon as it was over everything was back to where I was before. And I could really only do that when I was already in a fairly calm state. And for a time I was very “devoted” to trying meditation during my “I’m a white kid and I’m now a buddhist phase” to avoid as much medication as I could. Today I take medication and I am fine. My experience and any one experience, positive or negative, means nothing. Like I said even with well over 1,000 studies no genuine conclusion can be made.
