The Real You Meditation
This is based on a guided visualisation that I did with my therapist – who is fantastic with these. This meditation is one that I use at many times, particularly when I am confused or lacking direction.
Close your eyes, and breathe in gently through your nose, filling up your lungs, and then exhale through your mouth, expelling all the breath in your body. Take a few deep breaths and then continue, more gently, in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Focus on your breath, letting go of other thoughts.
Imagine a beautiful garden. This is your garden so it can take any shape you like, perhaps there are lawns, perhaps there are flowers, trees to relax under, perhaps a lake or waterfall. The garden is whatever you want it to be depending on your mood.
As you walk through the garden relax, breathe in the soothing air, enjoy the flowers, feel at peace.
Whenever and wherever you decide to stop and sit, or lie down in your garden, imagine a person beside you. This person is you. They are you exactly as you would choose to be, this is your perfect self, kind, patient, understanding, loving.
Relax and enjoy the company of this self.
When you are ready, talk to this person. You can ask them anything you like, understanding that they know you and want only good things for you.
I really hope that this particular meditation helps you as much as it has helped me. What I have found more often than not, with this meditation, is that the advice I receive is very often to stop trying so hard and just relax and enjoy myself – but whatever answers come from this, it is wonderfully reassuring to learn that all of the answers were inside of you already.

‘Round Midnight $16.98 Of all the string instruments, the cello is the one that is most self-sufficient when heard en masse. Villa-Lobos knew it — his “Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1 and 5″ are the results — and The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic have been proving it for some 30 years before the release of this album of American music of several stripes. No one needs to be told that this is a crossover special; after all, it has been released as a joint EMI Classics/Blue Note project. But this is no rah-rah album of patriotic pieties, for the CD explores the dark side of “America” as well as its soul-lifting show tunes, spirituals, and jazz tunes. Using all kinds of extended techniques that prod and scrape at the instruments, the opening “Caravan” sounds truly dangerous, capturing the dissonant strands that stick out of the Ellington 78 of the 1940s and have seldom been heard since. Bob Brookmeyer, the jazz trombonist/arranger/composer, surprises us all with “Amerika 2002: In Memoriam,” a troubled two-part meditation on the state of the union, inspired by the events of September 11. On the other hand, Leonard Bernstein’s “America” is turned into a neo-classical piece, while the “Pink Panther” theme emerges remarkably unchanged in its essential sneakiness. In what turned out to be the album’s principal coup, the cellists managed to persuade their new chief conductor, Sir Simon Rattle, to supply the “rap” for Sergio Cardenas’ hilarious “The Flower Is A Key (A Rap For Mozart).” Rattle obliges with his deep, mischievous Liverpudlian accent, putting his stamp on an album which serves notice that the tenures of Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado at the Berlin Phil are going to look awfully stodgy in comparison to the Rattle era. ~ Richard S. 3 $18.99 Susanna Wallumr? d’s albums with and without the Magical Orchestra (aka Jaga Jazzist’s Morten Qvenild) have all taken a similar approach, whether she focuses on her own songs (List of Lights and Buoys, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos) or the songs of others (Melody Mountain, Flower of Evil): her subtly remarkable voice — which carries within it echoes of singers from Nina Simone to Karen Carpenter — came first and foremost, surrounded by abstract arrangements soft enough not to detract from her vocals, but interesting enough to enhance them. Often, she sounded like she was singing with the weight of the world on her shoulders, but on the simply named 3, she and Qvenild sound like they’re bound for the stars. Lighter and more overtly electronic than Susanna & the Magical Orchestra’s previous work, these songs have a sci-fi glamour and wistfulness to them, as well as a grandeur that suggests vast dark skies filled with twinkling lights. 3 begins with one of its boldest departures, “Recall,” which sets Wallumr? d’s voice adrift on bubbling analog synths, weaving a hypnotic spell broken by huge drums that sound all the more massive compared to the polite percussion on her previous work. “Palpatine’s Dream” is even more striking, a song about Star Wars’ Sith lord made sleek and strangely sexy with electronics that stream by like meteorites and backing vocals by Wildbirds & Peacedrums’ Mariam Wallentin and Susanna’s brother Fredrik Wallumr? d. Not all of 3 is this drastically different than what came before it. Gently insightful songs like “The Game” and “Come On” could have appeared on Wallumr? d’s earlier albums, and she includes a couple of covers that reinforce what a gifted interpreter she is: Roy Harper’s “Another Day” becomes a dead-of-night piano meditation, and Rush’s “Subdivisions” is turned into a sparkling, ironically detached manifesto against conformity. Throughout, Wallumr? d, Qvenild, and company never lose the purity of their vision, particularly… |

Bee $12.03 “How doth the little busy bee improve each shining hour / and gather honey all the day from every opening flower!” This famed Isaac Watts verse reveals the enduring fascination that bees have held for humans: bees have long been admired for their remarkable socialization and architectural skills, and since the earliest times they have carried profound symbolic meanings. Claire Preston’s Bee offers a comprehensive survey of the natural and cultural history of the bee and explores the impressive body of literature that has grown out of man’s search for honey.Bee traces the bee’s role in art, politics, and social thought, drawing on scientific studies, literature, and historical texts. The volume examines the evolution of the bee’s cultural image from a symbol of virtue and civility to the dangerous swarms of killer bees in Hollywood horror flicks. From ancient political analogies to Renaissance debates about monarchy to studies of bee behavior that portend ominous conclusions for our own socialization and use of technology, Bee analyzes the complex connections between the bee and human culture.Written with energy and enthusiasm, Bee offers an original and fascinating meditation on this tiny workaholic. |
